The Vysokaya (High) and the Ploskaya (Flat) Towers. Since the 16 th century the entry to the mouth of the Pskova River, where the harbor and the Fish Market were situated, had been protected by the Watergate’s (water could flow through them) which were called "the Lower Lattice". In the 17 th century the High and the Flat Towers were connected by a stone arcade with two lifting gates - lattices.

In ancient times Pskov called Pleskov, from word "splashes" (in Russia - Pleskatsya. But the origin name Pskov is still under discussion.
